The MedGem handheld indirect calorimeter is an FDA-cleared, Class II, medical device that assesses metabolic rate by measuring a patient’s resting oxygen consumption.
Susie Wargin of 9News Denver was recently tested and found her resting metabolic rate to be 1400 calories. This means if she were to lie around and do nothing for 24 hours, her body would burn 1400 calories. She could then eat 1400 calories that day and have no weight gain or loss.
“Resting metabolic rate (RMR) makes up approximately 70% of an individual’s daily energy needs. Understanding a patient’s calorie needs is extremely important when establishing a weight loss plan,” said Dr. Scott O. McDoniel, Director of Clinical Affairs for Microlife Medical Home Solutions, Inc.
The test usually administrated in a doctors office and takes anywhere from 30-45 minutes and can cost between $50-75 depending on whether a nutritional consultation is involved.
Resting metabolic rate varies dramatically between individuals. Resting metabolic rate often changes as the result of weight loss and the MedGem device provides a solution for adjusting a patient’s nutrition plan to prevent weight loss plateaus.
Dr. Robert Huizenga, Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at UCLA and Medical Advisor to The Biggest Loser said, “We chose to use the MedGem device based on its accuracy in comparison to other indirect calorimeters.”
